The Birds of “The Unfeathered Bird”

Rebecca earned her master’s degree with a focus in avian ecology at Binghamton University, worked at Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology, has conducted international research on birds overseas, and completed her PhD in avian physiology the University of Memphis. She now teaches biology at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Math.

After a certain high level of technical skill is achieved, science and art tend to coalesce in esthetics, plasticity, and form. The greatest scientists are always artists as well. – Albert Einstein

Birdsketch by Rebecca Heiss (All Rights Reserved)I became a biologist for a reason. It was not that I was particularly good at the sciences, but that I was terrible at art. My stick figures were never going to pay the rent. Perhaps lacking the drive to master any one trade, I’ve dabbled, becoming proficient in a smattering of largely scientific endeavors. It is little wonder then, that Katrina van Grouw’s mastery of multiple fields makes me feel a twinge of jealousy. Continue reading “The Birds of “The Unfeathered Bird””

Hoover Dam – Science Tourist: Water Engineering 2

Hoover Dam by Ansel Adams (1942)
Hoover Dam by Ansel Adams (1942)

Last week I wrote about a pump that used steam power to empty a large lake. This week, the opposite: Hoover Dam created a lake to generate power!

Hoover Dam is built in the Colorado river, on the border of Nevada and Arizona. It’s very much in the middle of nowhere, but Vegas isn’t far away and Hoover Dam tours are one of the main attractions for visitors who quickly tire of the bright lights, casinos, shows, and theme hotels. About 15 minutes into the bus trip you will also have tired of puns on the word “dam(n)”, though, but that’s a sacrifice you’re going to have to make on this dam tour for the rest of the dam day. To give you an accurate experience, I’m going to be making dam puns throughout the rest of this post. Continue reading “Hoover Dam – Science Tourist: Water Engineering 2”

Lisa Hannigan’s Venn Diagram

The lyrics are careful and evocative, making the song feel like the start of a literary short story. Continue reading “Lisa Hannigan’s Venn Diagram”

Frasier’s Apartment Floorplan by Inaki Aliste Lizarralde (Copyright-Inaki Aliste Lizarralde; Used with Permission)

TV homes can be confusing. In reality, the rooms can be different sets. It can make it hard to figure out exactly how one space relates to another. Iñaki Aliste Lizarralde has come to our rescue with colorful and detailed floorplans from modern and classic (and modern classic TV shows). Some are going mad for the Big Bang Theory floorplan, but the Simpsons and Frasier are my jam. Just look at the detailed layout of the magical, sound proof kitchen!

Iñaki, if you are taking suggestions, The Cosby Show and Full House? Pretty please.
