When Supplements “Work”. . .Joy Slim Recall

An herbal supplement for weight loss called Joy Slim, is being discontinued and recalled. Why? Because it contains sibutramine, an FDA regulated drug. Sibutramine, an appetite suppressant, is also used to treat obesity. There is no word on whether the FDA will take further disciplinary action against the manufacturer.

Remember real drugs, with real physiological activities, have very real side effects. As a result, some drugs cannot be safely taken by individuals with certain underlying conditions or who are already taking other medications that are not compatible. Not only can these side effects and interactions not be avoided if they are undeclared, but the individuals that cannot take the drug due to underlying risk factors are likely customers for these types of supplement. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries so far.
