House of the Rising Sun

Is it the end of the world? 2012? An optical illusion?

No. The gigantic orb of fire hovering over Melbourne is a work of art. Rafael Lozano-Hemmer created the installation “Solar Equation” from a 14m wide spherical, helium balloon (you may now imagine the rest of this post in a Mickey Mouse squeaky voice) and five projectors. What makes this work go from cool to amazing, is that the images on the surface of the balloon are animations generated by “mathematical equations that simulate the turbulence, flares and sunspots that can be seen on the surface of the Sun.” This is what we call, in the business, “awesome”.

What do you call it when someone else has a 100 millionth scale model-simulation of the Sun and you don’t. Jealousy.
